I’ve started barefoot running on my treadmill for a variety of reasons; but what really got me started was purchasing then reading about my VFFs and the pros of barefoot running.
One of my biggest complaints has always been that I can’t walk more than 10-15 minutes without severe foot pain. Now this was true from the time I was a kid up, so while I’m obese now, that wasn’t always the case. But my foot pain has been, so while weight is likely exacerbating the issue, it’s not the only issue.
So I thought I’d keep a probably a sporadically updated journal of my barefoot running progress. This assumes I keep up with it: a whole other story.
Yesterday I started at 2 minutes at 2km/hour. I noted that my upper chest didn’t hurt as there’s nearly no bounce with a forefoot strike. I noted even more importantly that my feet did not hurt. But my calves did - shock surprise, right? Not really.
Today I did 3 minutes. At 2 minutes at 2km/hour; I wasn’t sure, but I decided to keep going and upped the speed to 3.5km/hour. This was surprisingly more enjoyable. My disproportionate upper chest did not bounce and thus did not hurt, though I wouldn’t be stupid enough to do this bra-less. Most importantly I barely felt my feet. I did, however, really feel my calves, whee!
Remember, I’m 100+ lbs overweight, I have flat feet, and an unfortunately large upper body mass or two. I’m taking this super slow because I am grossly overweight, grossly unfit, and well, have terrible, flat feet.
I’ve never been able to run for more than 30 seconds without pain. Suddenly I can run at a fairly decent clip and have no pain anywhere except the muscles that haven’t been used. That will be self-correcting with practice.
I didn’t dream I could find running enjoyable. It still seems foreign to me. But the first thing I thought of this morning (except the two soggy dogs that joined me in bed) was that I was looking forward to doing my 3 minutes on the treadmill. Tomorrow it will be 4. To a seasoned runner this seems piddly, but in my condition this is huge.
Right now when I walk I feel all sorts of floaty because my calves are in that weird “I did something” state.
... and here’s to hoping that this will make my daily VFF experience that much more enjoyable. To think, I can walk without pain. It’s something of a minor miracle for me.

you happiness in this post makes me happy when i’m reading it. Good luck and i have a feeling that you are going to stick with it. It sounds like you are going to end up in a positive re-enforcement loop where each day’s progress feeds your desire for the next day’s work, that’s awesome!
