On Thursday I got back from a week in San Francisco/Santa Carla. I spent several days with growl, enjoying the time together. We don’t get nearly enough of that in person. Growl took me up to Santa Cruz where we saw Santa Cruz 1 - the hippie, artsy, wine-tasting section. I fell in love and I’d just love to move out there some day.
I also got to see Tiayr and got sunburnt while losing in mini-golf. It was close, he won by only 4 points. He also beat me 2-1 in a little arcade basketball game. At least I won once? Tiayr, Growl and I then went to dinner. It was fantastic.
Growl took me into the city to attend EECI on Monday. As always, seeing everyone was incredible. Seeing my team was especially wonderful. It was a wonderful and exhausting 3 days.
On Wednesday I took off from the conference for a minor shopping trip, and Robin accompanied me. I went and purchased some Vibram Five Fingers and I haven’t worn anything since (except for airport security, being none-too-sure they’d let me wear them through and certain I couldn’t get them on quickly).
My right pinky toe hurts a bit but it is getting much better and I have beaten the 2 minute barrier getting them on. I think I’ll get some Flows for winter, or see what the other options are. I understand many folks like the KSOs, so we’ll see. The store didn’t properly fit me either so I am going to head over to REI and make sure I have the right size. I started with the Classics and adore them. They’re perfect for daily-wear, especially in summer as they’re very open.
I also did 2 minutes on my treadmill of barefoot running. I’m up against a lot of issues here:
1. Poor form from wearing sneakers forever
2. Poor fitness from never exercising
3. Overweight from poor diet and never exercising
Normally they say to start out at 5 minutes but I think that is for people that are used to running while wearing sneakers. I am not used to running at all, and at 2 minutes my calves hurt so I figured I’d stop there. I’ll work that up slowly. For the first time in my entire life running was actually comfortable once I got the forefront strike (not heel strike, that hurts) down pat. Also because the upper body is “quiet” I’m finding that this is much more comfortable with my current uh, upper body measurements which make bouncing really uncomfortable.
I’m discovering muscles in my feet and legs that I didn’t even know existed. The dogs may actually get many more walks now.
Meanwhile, we thought Mali might have asthma and it turns out she has/had a hiatal hernia. It was gone on the second xray, which somewhat confirms the rather unusual diagnosis. Pepcid forever should control this. Surgery is an option in the future if it starts to come up more often and stick around.
This weekend is one for relaxing and lots of laundry. Tuesday my house is being professionally deep-cleaned but that means some organization this weekend. Mali is being especially demanding and the dogs are still tired from boarding, which means I can be fairly chill for a few days. Last week felt like vacation and so Monday is almost akin to “back to work”. Looking forward to it!
