Running progress, a clean house, and an iPad

I’ve been running every day.  5 minutes on the treadmill.  It’s a start, right?

I’m taking today off and just doing some stretching because my calves hurt.  If it clears up for a bit I’ll walk the dogs but that’s about all I want to use my legs for right now.

Yesterday I had the lovely folks from Maid to Shine Cleaning over.  It took two people 5 hours to deep-clean the house and it has made an absolutely huge difference.  They even moved the furniture.  My appliances look brand new.  It’s really a joy to be here again.  I’m going to run some numbers to make sure that it makes financial sense, but I’m pretty sure I can afford to have them come monthly to clean.  I’ll have to do some stuff in-between cleanings to keep things nice but having that monthly visit would make a big difference in my living conditions.

I also got an iPad on Saturday.  A 64gig 3g iPad.  I love it.  I honestly wasn’t sure where it would fit into my life but so far it fits in as a web browser and chat device:

1.  When going out to restaurants to let friends play with it.
2.  On the couch.
3.  In bed.
4.  When doing laundry.
5.  On the treadmill.
6.  On the recumbent bike.
7.  Wandering around aimlessly.
8.  Hanging out with the dogs outside (need an anti-glare thinger for it though).
9.  Waiting at the vet’s office for something.

And performs many functions beyond web browsing and chatting:

1.  As a white-noise generator/alarm clock.
2.  As a picture frame when I have guests (maybe).
3.  As a cookbook.
4.  As a yoga instructor.
5.  To track what I’m eating and my exercise routine.
6.  As a gaming device.
7.  As a book reading device (both iBooks and Kindle).

I’m sure I’ll find more, I keep adding more just in this list.  You’ll note I have not yet used it to watch movies.  Quite frankly at home I have a 65” TV (living room) and a 50” TV (bedroom).  I’m going to load some movies for when I’m out of the house.

For pure reading I *do* prefer the Kindle’s e-ink; it’s simply less head-ache inducing. But it’s so light that if I do go out of town I’ll likely bring both, but when I’m around town, the iPad is fine for short-term reading.  When I go out of town I will not likely bring a laptop with me.

Essentially I’m using the iPad several times a day often for hours at a time; in fact, the only time I’m not using it is when I’m working and need things like FTP, Textmate, a full keyboard, Mercurial, Terminal, etc.

So new tech, clean house, and new fitness routine.  I’m taking it slow with the latter so that I don’t go so overboard that I can’t keep it up, which I’ve done several times.  But even I can find 5 minutes a day to exercise, eh?  And while I’m not changing my diet right now, I am choosing lower calorie/fat foods of the same I’d normally eat.  It’s not perfect, some of these should go away completely (cheetos be damned), but slow and steady change is what will work for me, I hope.

(Oh, and it’s cherry season. Fresh cherries YUM!)
