SXSW 2010

Over the course of this last weekend I received some kisses and lots of hugs.

My favorite type of weekend!

What did I do, you might ask?  Why, I joined my peers at SXSW!  Derek, Greg, and myself represented EllisLab down at SXSW.  We spent a lot of time hanging out with Nevin and Laurie of EngineHosting as well.

And, of course, we spent most of our time with some of our wonderful community members.  The ExpressionEngine & CodeIgniter community is absolutely out-of-this-world unbelievable.  They’re not only surpassingly brilliant, but they’re down-to-earth, friendly, engaging, and quite a few are very affectionate.  I love hugs.

We began the weekend with a wonderful dinner downstairs in Finn & Porter, continued on to Saturday with some scheduled “meet and greets” where we got to talk shop with developers using CodeIgniter and ExpressionEngine.

Saturday evening we attended Happy Cog’aoke which was a blast, though I was absolutely freezing by the end of it.  I even had a jacket in the hotel room, woops.  While I am not the biggest fan of either karaoke or large amounts of strangers in a party with strobe lights, I managed find a comfortable hang out chat with some great folks.

So I’m not a party-gal, what can I say?

In any case!

Initially we were supposed to leave Monday but at the last minute, ExpressionEngine 2.0: Total Domination was approved.  This was a fantastic panel featuring some incredible speakers.  We had lunch with the panelists after said panel.

Oh, and let’s back up and not forget our company dinner at Fogo De Chao.  Yum.  If you haven’t been? Go.  We hung out at the lounge after.  I got a bit tipsy (a bit…. m’hm) and finally collapsed around 2am?  I don’t know.  That was Sunday night.

Monday evening we attended the EECI preParty which was an absolute blast.  Again, not necessarily my normal scene, being in a bar with loud music, but at least this time the people there had common interests, and soon there were no strangers present.

If I may say, somewhere along the line of working with EllisLab and going out into the community I have become infinitely more outgoing and actually enjoy it.  At the EECI preParty it wasn’t at all unusual to see me introduce myself to complete strangers that I had never met, and engage in conversation and be happy  One of our community members mentioned the huge smile I had permanently affixed to my face.  This kind of behavior is a huge departure from my norm, but is definitely the highlight of these community events.

I feel like I’ve found my place in this community.  ExpressionEngine has always been more than a job to me, of course it started out with me helping before I was employed.  EllisLab, EngineHosting, ExpressionEngine, CodeIgniter, and the entire community is extremely important to me, I love the entire atmosphere.

Right now I am typing this on the plane from San Jose to Portland, and I am meeting a long-standing goal: I have always wanted to fly first class, to see what it was like.  I managed to finagle a $50 upgrade to first class for this entire trip; and it’s all that I thought it would be.  The level of comfort is amazing.

Right now, I’m winding down and looking forward to being back home.  I’ll go get Mali and Elka and get them home and settled in, after which I have to pick up my next Golden Bond foster, whose name is Milton.  He is a 4.5 month old golden retriever (possibly mix? hard to say at this age). It’s a whole new adventure.

I have many more updates, mostly surrounding Mali (of course!) but I wanted to write this down while I had it all fresh in my head.

To those of you that I met at SXSW, and to our entire community, a gigantic thank you.  What I do is made possible only because the community is just so incredible.  And thank you for all of the hugs.

... and onwards to EECI!
