Thoughts on Facebook

I use Facebook.

Facebook enables me to stay connected with people I wouldn’t otherwise be easily able to, such as friends from Smith.

I have some concerns over the privacy issues that have come up as late, but my concerns aren’t really from a personal front.  The reason for this being that everything that goes into my Facebook can be seen on distant, early morning or on Twitter, or both.

Years ago, when Facebook was still university-restricted, it became known that employers could gain access to look up potential recruits.  Before that, even, people started realizing that “if it’s on the web, it’s out there”.  I have always been fairly careful of what I put out there, with increased care over the course of the last few years.  I never lifted that restriction for Facebook, if anything I was more strict with my limits for what information would go over to that account.

For that reason, I will not be deactivating or deleting my Facebook account.  That information is public anyway, so why lose those social connections?  Doesn’t make any sense to me.

However, I think that the warning to be careful with your information has become even more clear over the past few months with the shenanigans that Facebook has pulled with their auto-opt-in and no-opt-out changes.  I still don’t trust Facebook - but that hasn’t changed for me.

Hopefully they’ll get their act together, but ultimately I believe that you should only put online what you would be happy for your grandma and employers to see.  These services should always remain as untrusted organizations, they exist for their own profit and have no reason to keep your data safe or private - expecting them to is setting yourself up for disappointment and, ultimately, exposure - likely more exposure than you ever wanted.
