Holidays and Pets

Let’s admit, I’m not religious.

I have a huge disregard for religion.

It’s not that I dislike religious people - what I have a disdain for is the commercialized form of religion that our country engenders.

To me, holidays aren’t a time for celebration.  Holidays signify a time when animals will be purchased, “enjoyed”, then neglected, possibly abused, and far too often discarded.  Tomorrow is the day for “easter bunnies”, Christmas is puppies and kittens.

I find that absolutely disgusting.

Disgusting is an understatement.

In fact, it makes me extremely angry.

What I don’t understand is how people can combine what are generally positive sentiments with the aftermath they wreak.  A good meaning family, with no foresight, and little real care, brings in a puppy for Christmas then 2 days later dumps it in a shelter - or worst “frees” the poor animal to the wild.  The chance for those “freed” animals to survive is almost nil.

It baffles me that this has become almost normalized in American culture.  Shelters know that they’re going to be overfilled in the days following the holidays.

Right now, shelters that take rabbits are preparing for the deluge of abandoned rabbits that Easter brings.

I understand celebrating holidays, especially by those who have faith.  But one need only walk into a supermarket to see that Easter is no longer about a religious event - it is about sugar and rabbits.  Christmas is about lights and toys.

What happened to family?  What happened to holidays meaning family reunions, singing, playing, and enjoying each other’s company?

When did holidays turn into a time of gross animal abandonment - abandoning innocent, loving creatures that rely on our care for their very life?

So yes, I dislike religion - not faith, and not religious people.

I hate the state of religion in our country.
